Deutsche Guggenheim events during Art Forum in Berlin

This year’s Berlin Art Forum takes place from October 7–10. Represented at the art fair are not only important galleries of contemporary work; the halls at the Radio Tower also host numerous podium discussions with renowned figures on the international art scene. One of the highlights is certainly the conversation between Anupam Poddar, founding director of the Devi Art Foundation, New Delhi, and Sandhini Poddar, Assistant Curator of Asian Art at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York. Anupam Poddar is regarded to be the leading collector of contemporary Indian art—in a country that has developed into a booming art center over the past several years. His Devi Art Foundation is India’s first museum for contemporary art; it shows primarily video and photographic works, for instance from Lida Abdul, Sheba Chhachhi, and Shilpa Gupta, whose works will also be represented in the new art installment of the Deutsche Bank towers in Frankfurt. In conversation with Sandhini Poddar, curator of the exhibition Being Singular Plural: Moving Images from India at the Deutsche Guggenheim, Anupam Poddar introduces his collection and explains the possibilities for sponsoring, exhibiting, and collecting film and video art. The talk takes place on Saturday, October 9 in the Palais am Funkturm.

On the other hand, the site of the project periferry@spree is the MS Stralau—a ship that will ride up and down a section of the Spree River along the former boundary between East and West Berlin. The Indian artist duo Desire Machine Collective invites the public to a three-hour ship ride. The program includes discussions on alternative art spaces and collective art production, readings, and film presentations. Before the Spree ride, together with Sandhini Poddar the two artists will introduce their work on view in the exhibition Being Singular Plural at the Deutsche Guggenheim.

At the same time as Art Forum, The Big Draw will also take place in Berlin. The drawing festival invites visitors to become creative with artists using pencils, paint, and paper. Deutsche Bank supports The Big Draw, because paper works form the main focus of the bank collection. Thus, the main event of the festival takes place in the Atrium of its headquarters at Unter den Linden. On October 9, 2010, the action WertPapier explores drawing’s communicative possibilities, and after that, experts such as Barbara Bader of the Hochschule der Künste Bern, Béatrice Gysin, editor of the recently published book Wozu zeichnen? (Why draw?), and Friedhelm Hütte, Global Head of Art, Deutsche Bank, will discuss the current significance of the medium. Deutsche Guggenheim will also participate in The Big Draw. Visitors to the event Ganz großes Kino! (Very Great Cinema!) can draw their own flip-books.
