Presentation and Representation
Mathias Poledna and Christopher Williams at the Bonner Kunstverein

Mathias Poledna's work is currently on view in New York, where his film installation Crystal Palace is being shown at the New Museum in a presentation of works realized in the framework of the Deutsche Bank-sponsored 3M Project. Now, the works of the Los Angeles-based Austrian can also be seen in Germany—in cooperation with the American artist Christopher Williams. The two developed a project for the Bonner Kunstverein that focuses on the making of the actual exhibition and its accompanying conditions. To this purpose, they installed flexible wall elements in the rooms of the Kunstverein that stem from various different exhibition institutions in the environs of Bonn. The architectural fragments appear as large-scale sculptures that reference the divergent histories and programs of the Rhineland institutions. The two artists share a conceptual approach that questions the conditions of presentation and representation, mediated perception, and the realistic representation of reality. Of key importance are the themes authorship and making production conditions visible. In addition, Mathias Poledna will be developing a work this fall for the Portikus in Frankfurt.
